We are comprehensive school with 849 students on roll. We do not have a Sixth Form. We are an Enterprise Academy and felt that the Skills Builder was perfect to introduce Enterprise and the Skills required to the KS3 curriculum.
Overall impact
Working with Skills Builder has helped students in develop their skills which has been reflected in their school life. Teachers have found it useful in applying it in lessons and reminding students which skills they are developing.
Keep it simple
We have had an Inset training session led by myself to staff on Skills Builder. The skills icons are displayed in classrooms. Skills Builder icons displayed on TV screens around school. Skills Builder information is sent out to Parents in our weekly Newsletter too.
Start early, keep going
We have added Skills Builder in our curriculum in KS3 as well as Tutorial time. Students learn these skills and apply it in lessons, events and assemblies.
Measure it
Subject teachers assess students via the Skills Builder Hub and measure how they have developed and used these skills in lessons.
Focus tightly
When given tasks in lesson, teachers highlight the skills that are being enhanced.
Keep practising
We have regular events throughout the year that allows students to practice the essential skills. During parents/options evening, we have students as tour guides and many skills are used and reflected on.
Bring it to life
We have business volunteers who provide students with information of skills and qualities employers look for. This is all linked to the Framework which makes it easier for students to follow.
What's next
We want to to use Skill Builder across the whole school.
