Beyond the Mirror is a 9-week creative beauty programme designed to support young people in exploring identity, confidence, and self-expression through makeup and nail artistry. Delivered by experienced facilitators, the programme integrates practical beauty skills with structured personal development, using the Skills Builder Universal Framework, particularly the Problem Solving essential skill, to guide progression. Each session combines technical demonstrations, hands-on practice, and reflective tasks that encourage learners to build resilience, think critically, and develop transferable skills for future pathways. The programme is inclusive, culturally responsive, and designed to engage young people through relevant, interest-led learning.

Essential skills are embedded directly into hands-on beauty training and consistently reinforced through structured reflection. During practical sessions, such as colour theory, eye makeup, and nail art, learners are explicitly introduced to specific steps of the Skills Builder Problem Solving Framework and apply them in real-time tasks, like correcting a makeup error or adapting a design. Reflection prompts and guided discussions at the beginning and end of each session encourage learners to assess their choices, evaluate outcomes, and refine their techniques. This integrated approach ensures that essential skills are not taught in isolation, but are developed within technical and creative challenges. Facilitators support this process by capturing progress through observation notes and written reflections from learners, allowing for meaningful, measurable tracking of individual growth across the skill steps.
