The Higher Education Progression Partnership (Hepp) works across South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire to encourage more children, young people and adults to consider higher education opportunities. It is jointly funded by Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield.
GOALS Breakfast Club is an attainment raising project funded by HeppSY and South Yorkshire Children’s University to support the progress of Year 7, 8 and 9 students in target schools.
The aim of the initiative is to develop students’ independent learning, goal setting and problem solving through a series of fun, challenging activities. HeppSY and South Yorkshire Children’s University fund the catering and staff the delivery of the project, which consists of 12 x 30-minute Breakfast Club sessions taking place before the start of the school day. Breakfast is provided for students.
During the course of the project, participating students will be guided to research and plan a funding application for a school enrichment resource and the project will culminate in the successful bid being funded by HeppSY and South Yorkshire Children’s University and presented by the participating students.
The objectives of the project include pupils understanding the value of varied skillsets and identifying them to allocate roles and responsibilities. They are also supported to quantify and manage a budget, understand sustainability, consider accessibility and inclusion, identify tasks from a project plan to complete as part of a team and manage risks.
Activities within the project are aligned to essential skill steps and students are supported to reflect on how these skill steps support their learning. Surveys are used to identify where these skill steps supported key outcomes and to capture learners' progression around focus skill steps.
