A programme for local young people to learn about engineering careers at Heathrow.
To inspire the next generation to consider a career in engineering, Heathrow Airport delivers an Engineering Insights experience for groups of up to 12 local young people aged 16-18 in education.
During the experience, which lasts up to five days, participants see what it takes to deliver maintenance and engineering to over 500,000 different assets across the airport.
The essential skills are used throughout, and first introduced to participants on their first day as part of an interactive airport map activity. Students are asked to consider what the essential skills mean, and how they use these skills in their day-to-day life. When out in the airport meeting colleagues, students are encouraged to ask the colleague how they use the essential skills in their role.
During the experience, there is also an interview practice session, where students prepare for and participate in a mock interview with a Heathrow colleague. The interview questions are all framed around the essential skills, with students being asked to provide examples of when they have used and developed the Essential Skills.
Students also use the Framework to assess where they sit at each level of the skill, to support their development.
Students who complete are encouraged to apply for the Engineering Apprenticeship.
