Words for Work provides young people with the literacy skills they need to shape and achieve their aspirations. Students get to meet professionals from a local business to learn about the practical application of literacy skills in the workplace and also learn about careers. The programme is available to students at KS1, KS3, KS4 and Post-16 across the UK.

Words for Work aims to:

  • Demonstrate the importance of literacy for success in employment by providing workplace context for students
  • Improve young people’s verbal and written communication skills through activities lead by teachers and through engagement with business volunteers
  • Give young people confidence in their own abilities and raise their career aspirations.

Throughout the Key Stage 3 programme, there is a focus on gaining transferable essential skills, aligned to the Skills Builder Universal Framework. Specific focus steps from the Skills Builder Universal Framework are referenced within student workbooks and lesson plans, giving learners the opportunity to reflect upon their own skills. Activities are then aligned to skill steps so learners can practise and apply skills, whilst pre- and post-workshop surveys capture the impact on learners’ skill development.
